Volunteer Opportunities

It takes a lot of hands to serve two meals a week — and not all of them need to be in the kitchen. We have roles for those who love connecting with people at our services, and roles for those who prefer to help us prepare and keep things running smoothly in the background.

Volunteering at meals

At the hall volunteers will prep breads for nibbles, make cold salads, cook hot sides such as rice, pasta, and soup, set up the tables and chairs, provide hot drinks, set up for service. During the meal we serve the guests the food provided, then clean up, wash up and pack down.

It can be hard work and can get pretty hectic - but we have a kitchen manager present to help organise all activities and provide support and guidance. It is also a great experience and allows you to interact with the guests directly and understand a little more about them.

We do not want volunteers working every week - we understand that you have lives. However, we do need regular volunteers to reduce the stress of trying to fill the roster every week. We only ask that you can commit to help once or twice a month. It might be helping at the hall one week and cooking a hot side dish another week.

Volunteer BEHIND the Scenes

These are all activities that are key to being able to provide the meals - but can be fitter around your life and schedule.

Cooking/baking: Because our cooking facilities at the hall are limited, we rely on much of our food being cooked off-site. These may be frozen for a later date or delivered hot prior to a service, (so when you do it can be flexible). We also have some great home bakers making sweet treats to go with both our Thursday and Saturday meals. We can provide all of the ingredients and even cooking equipment!

Bulk Cook Days: We run one or two bulk cook days (a morning or afternoon!) where we meet to cook big batches of freezer-friendly meals - curries, chillis, bolognaise, lasagnas, potato-topped pies, soups and more - anything that reheats beautifully on a stovetop, in the oven, or in a slow cooker.

Laundry: Every service towels used by our guests for showers that need to be washed and dried before our next service. We can provide the laundry powder and reimburse you a bit towards power.

Donation pick-ups: We have some amazing local businesses that support us with products and these need collecting and brought to the hall.
